Yuen is a University Lecturer with a passion for bringing inclusivity into mainstream classrooms and creating safe and equitable environments for under-supported special education needs (SEN) students. Equipped with the expertise of a trained educator, she joins the Fellowship with a curious and keen attitude akin to a student.
Raised by immigrant parents from Mainland China in the late-’70s, Yuen considers herself a bicultural person nurtured by the native influences of Hong Kong. Having spent most of her life here in the city, she came to admire those who are adaptable and resilient and how they have helped make Hong Kong a more open and inclusive society.
In Yuen’s current capacity as a senior lecturer at the Psychology department of Lingnan University, she is increasingly attending to a growing population of SEN university students. From an educator’s perspective, she wishes to provide students with guidance and opportunities to thrive and succeed. Noticing the lack of early identification and support services for these students, she has developed a professional interest in creating mainstream learning environments that are more inclusive. Eager to better understand what is required to support SEN students, she participated in SEN workshops and talks organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission at the university.
When it comes to the idea of inclusive education, Yuen’s vision of promoting e(quality) education places value in first being able to recognize how people are different to one another, acknowledging and appreciating the contributions made by others, and lastly ensuring fairness in accessing education for all. Prior to joining the Fellowship, she had recently completed a fellowship program organized by Effective Altruism Hong Kong (EAHK). She is most interested in gaining broader perspectives from different community leaders and being inspired by new ideas that focus on making Hong Kong a more inclusive place.
She enjoys reading, swimming, watching movies, and practising mindfulness in her free time.
