About

Venus Cheung

Venus uses architecture and empathetic design to promote wellbeing in Hong Kong. Through the Fellowship she hopes to connect with budding leaders from diverse fields and take advantage of Resolve’s mentorship opportunities.

How can we reimagine public and private spaces to promote health and wellbeing? This is the question that shapes Venus’ work as an architect. Currently an architecture research assistant at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a master’s candidate at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, she believes that empathetic design is at the heart of an inclusive city. She sees architecture as fundamental to providing dignity, choice, visibility and opportunity to people from all walks of life. She wants to see Hong Kong promote walking and aging in place, transforming its compact size into a core strength.

With the goal of infusing hope into everyday spaces, Venus has been involved in a number of design projects in the city. From age-friendly urban furniture to a dementia-friendly therapy garden at a public housing estate in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong’s most impoverished district, spatial justice, responsive design and bottom-up urban planning are central to her work. She is a United Nations Volunteer Alumnus and a former architectural assistant of One Bite Design Studio. She has been involved in workshops in collaboration with PolyU JCDISI, MaD, Warehouse Teenage Club, Tin Library, and YWCA. Her current project at CUHK in collaboration with Concern For Grassroots’ Livelihood Alliance, Alliance for Children Development Rights and CollaborateHK focuses on regenerating unplanned and forgotten public spaces and enabling community members to play an active role in the decision-making process. Additionally, Venus is an alumnus of Earth Farm Fellowship and a current fellow of Climate Advocacy Training for Youth 2022 by CarbonCare InnoLab.

Through the Fellowship, Venus hopes to delve into the current health and well-being landscape of Hong Kong, develop strategies to advocate for universal design, and make connections with emerging leaders from diverse fields. She believes that the mentorship opportunities offered by Resolve will help her better leverage their experience, network, and skills to contribute to social justice in Hong Kong.

In her free time, Venus likes running, lifting weights, hiking, and going on city walks to appreciate the juxtaposition of old and new urbanscapes. At home she can be found testing new vegan recipes, drawing, meditating or learning languages.
