Sun wants to promote the innovative healing practice of forest therapy in Hong Kong, especially to people who have experienced trauma. He intends to gain knowledge to develop his own forest therapy social enterprise, and better understand the needs of diverse communities through the Fellowship.
Born and raised in the territory, Sun envisions Hong Kong as a trauma-informed city of the future – with forest therapy as a key intervention. He sees forest therapy, which boasts a range of benefits to both physical and mental health, playing a key role in helping people in the city heal in the face of dramatic social upheaval and political uncertainty. Having first-hand experience using forest therapy to regain balance and purpose, Sun noticed a dire need for trauma-informed healthcare services that recognize the prevalence of severe trauma in the population, and extend care to people in need with respect and understanding.
A youth campaign program led by Oxfam during the World Trade Organization conference in Hong Kong in 2005 galvanized Sun to shift careers and focus on social justice. He has spent the last 10 years in the nonprofit and tertiary education sector, and currently works as a part time research associate studying the impact of forest therapy on blood pressure and stress level while developing his own forest therapy social enterprise. He is a certified Forest Therapy Guide and endeavors to promote forest therapy among members of the public as an antidote to the high-stress work culture for which the city is infamous. Sun has guided over 100 forest therapy walks for over 800 people, with participants including elderly people, youth, families, social workers and beyond. Additionally, he has taken on roles involving design thinking and social innovation, and participated as a facilitator in a social innovation workshop series led by Oxfam focused on innovative poverty alleviation solutions.
Through the Fellowship, Sun hopes to develop a sustainable model that would make forest therapy accessible to underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. He also hopes to reach community leaders to understand how best to adapt forest therapy to meet diverse needs.
Sun enjoys working out, spending time in nature, and resting, which he believes is the key to physical and mental wellbeing.
