Having escaped generational poverty through receiving education, Stephanie recognizes first-hand the importance of (e)quality education, particularly for migrant domestic workers (MDWs) and others confronting social mobility challenges. She is working towards her goal of being a social worker and giving back to society through helping others in their journey of moving up the social ladder.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Stephanie spent much of her childhood with her MDW, whom she fondly refers to as “auntie”, while both her parents were constantly working. Through impactful real-life encounters, she realized that not all MDWs were treated fairly due to the unequal power dynamics with their employers. Therefore, she hopes to make Hong Kong a more inclusive place for everyone, especially MDWs.
As part of her postgraduate training in social work, Stephanie undertook her practicum at the social service agency Caritas Asian Migrant Workers Social Service Project (Caritas AMP), primarily serving MDWs. During her fieldwork, she discovered that some MDWs were not given food or allowance for food, which is against their employers’ contractual obligations. Noticing many MDWs were reluctant to voice out for fear of losing their jobs, her indignation motivated her to bring this issue to light. Stephanie believes that the lack of awareness of labor rights and the power imbalance between employers and MDWs has hampered many MDWs from improving their work and living conditions. Seeing how this often leaves them disempowered and exploited, she highlights the significance of education (e)quality as education is the first step to empowerment.
Stephanie is currently working full-time as an Executive Officer at the City University of Hong Kong, assisting a research project on elderly community healthcare called “CityU HomAge”. She also volunteers as a counselor at OpenUp, an online text-based emotional support platform, and has led the Go Green Volunteer Choir at Caritas AMP.
Stephanie joins the Fellowship to receive professional guidance from the mentors in realizing her vision and to form inspiring connections with like-minded individuals who share the same passion for social work and advocacy. She loves to sing and volunteer during her leisure time.
