About

Sarah Sumaylo

As a migrant domestic worker (MDW) devoting her efforts to supporting other mistreated MDWs, Sarah hopes to collaborate with a like-minded team that will support her dream of reshaping Hong Kong and foster more cultural understanding towards MDWs through educating both the workers and their employers.

Having settled in Hong Kong, Sarah has stopped seeing herself as a mere MDW — often a label loaded with bias and stigma – and instead begun to recognize her work as a respectable occupation that opens up more learning opportunities from the community around her, for instance, joining the Fellowship. She envisions a more equitable, inclusive future for Hong Kong where racism and colorism are no longer a barrier to one’s potential and rights in accessing education, work, and services.

Strongly committed to reducing racial discrimination, Sarah has built strong community networks, such as serving as the general secretary for “Love, Peace, and Unity”, a Filipino group focusing on assisting MDWs. She is notably the Founder of Filipino Migrant Link and Co-founder of “Gabay at Kalinga ng mga Ofw Hongkong”, both social media platforms that provide tailored assistance to MDWs. She is also one of the trainer of Pathfinder’s Train the Trainer Program to talk about maternity rights and one of the community leaders in HELP for Domestic Workers, and an ambassador of Mission for Ethnic Minorities’ Sexual Health. During the pandemic, these platforms played a major role in providing food supplies to MDWs under quarantine. It was then she realized that despite providing clear information about MDWs’ rights, there were still a number of MDWs who had been deprived of food, statutory holidays and rights to medication by their employers. Her goal, therefore, is not only to educate MDWs, but also their employers about the cultural backgrounds, traditions, and customs of their MDWs, providing cultural sensitivity training to employers to foster a stronger relationship built on respect rather than power imbalances perpetuated by discrimination and misunderstanding.

Sarah believes in the power of education in empowering MDWs and sharpening their leadership skills. She joins the Fellowship with the hope of gaining support and guidance from other fellows and mentors who would be critical to the project she wishes to kickstart. In her spare time, she vlogs on her Youtube channel to share her journey in Hong Kong and the stories of other MDWs she calls “Unknown Heroes”. She also loves reading, writing, singing, dancing, watching documentaries, and mostly photography.
