Pui Yin identifies herself as an out lesbian and a feminist who is passionate about educating the public on gender and sexuality, and the intersectionality of various gender-related issues. Through the Fellowship, she hopes to make meaningful connections and take her community work to the next level.
A vocal gender advocate, Pui Yin is particularly inspired by the legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw on the concept of intersectionality, which she sees as a guiding force in her fight for gender equality and the rights of LGBTQIA+ communities.
Being a second-generation immigrant and having enjoyed great education and work opportunities made Pui Yin realize how education can be a tool for liberation. Burdened by traditional family expectations, she hopes to break the rules and lead an independent life in pursuing social justice in academia. Even though Hong Kong provides 12-year universal primary and secondary education, she believes there needs to be better quality education that caters to the needs of different marginalized communities, such as ethnic minority children enrolled in Chinese medium schools and students with disabilities.
Committed to advancing quality education in Hong Kong, Pui Yin joins the 2023 Fellowship with the aim of pursuing personal growth and realize her potential. She hopes to meet and work with different community leaders in the future to promote more educational opportunities, advance gender education and aspire to be a more thoughtful and better leader to form her own community by making friends and driving positive change in solidarity.
In the past, Pui Yin has volunteered with different organizations concerning women’s rights and gender, including HER fund, Zi Teng and Bethune House, working alongside LGBTQIA+ youths, sex workers and migrant domestic workers. In 2018, she received a full scholarship from W.T Chan Fellowship Program by Lingnan Foundation to pursue gender studies at the University of California, Berkeley and later interned at Lavender Phoenix, an organization that builds transgender, non-binary, and queer API (Asian and Pacific Islander) power in the Bay Area, San Francisco.
Currently, Pui Yin is a research assistant at university, while also working as a freelance writer to publish and distribute her zines that focus on gender-related issues through different local independent bookstores. During her free time, Pui Yin likes to read and write. She also enjoys film photography, as she takes portraits occasionally.
