About

Lily Layug

Lily is a migrant domestic worker (MDW) dedicated to supporting her fellow MDWs to overcome language barriers and eliminate stigmatization through self-empowered education. She joins the 2023 Fellowship in the hope of enhancing her leadership skills, gaining valuable insights into educational inequity, and addressing unequal educational opportunities facing the community.

Recognizing Hong Kong as a welcoming provider of homely institutions and enriching lifestyles, Lily is an MDW who hopes to seek wisdom and challenge herself to build capacities for self-improvement. As an MDW, she appreciates how inclusivity has helped her to bond with other ethnic minorities and relate to other marginalized communities despite language barriers. She envisions a future for Hong Kong where different communities share deeper connections and are empowered to freely express themselves. Seeing self-expression as a basic right, Lily is also a community leader of the charitable organization Help-Circles, an organization that works on education for MDWs, where she conducts seminars, delivers outreach programs and educates MDWs on their rights.

Lily hopes to promote equal educational opportunities for marginalized communities and eliminate discrimination in addressing the unequal treatment and everyday racism faced by the MDWs community, especially when it comes to recognizing the contribution of MDWs. She sees quality education as a solution to build a more sustainable and inclusive Hong Kong by empowering individuals to achieve their full potential.

To Lily, (e)quality education enables individuals to enhance their technological and financial literacy and accessibility, hence improving their quality of life. It also brings people from all walks of life together to learn and grow, fostering unity and solidarity in the workplace. Committed to her work in advancing social justice, Lily takes part in the Fellowship to seek professional guidance. She hopes the program can facilitate the growth of her leadership skills and uncover new ideas that will enhance her skills in advancing social responsibility and community engagement throughout the Fellowship.

Lily is enthusiastic about learning something new, reading the news and books, watching Netflix documentaries, cooking and watching cooking shows. She also helps her close ones craft invitation cards, attends free Sunday seminars hosted by various NGOs and empowers herself at EmpowerU.
