About

Kimberly Wu

Kimberly met three Deaf classmates while studying at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She started to learn Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL), and was introduced to the Deaf community. Being able to communicate using HKSL and getting to know Deaf culture, she developed a strong sense of empathy towards the community, and was enlightened by her Deaf friends. Since then, she has become a strong ally to the Deaf community.

Born, raised, and fully educated in Hong Kong, Kimberly introduces herself as “100% made in Hong Kong”. Born in the 90s, she notices widening social inequalities, and civil rights deteriorating in Hong Kong. This inspires her to work on empowering people with disabilities to actively participate in civil society.

To make Hong Kong a just, diversified, and inclusive society where everyone can live with dignity and respect, she is committed to promoting social justice, accessibility and disability rights in Hong Kong. To her, empowerment is about understanding our own rights and values, and being able to speak for ourselves. She believes that all of us have the responsibility to make our own decisions and drive social change so that we can truly participate in society and build stronger communities.

Currently, Kimberly is a professional sign interpreter and an Assistant Project Officer at SLCO Community Resources Limited, an NGO raising public awareness on sign bilingualism and other disability rights, as well as providing front-line sign interpretation services. Through working with a group of Deaf and hearing interpreters, and Hong Kong Deaf Empowerment, she organises ‘Deaf Classroom’, a series of workshops on different social issues relevant to the Deaf Community. She is also involved in the Coalition of Advocates for HK Sign Language to fight for the status of sign language and other reasonable accomodations in different sectors (medical, media, education, and public services) in society.

Through the Social Justice Fellowship Program, Kimberly hopes to not only build connections, but also receive comprehensive input, training and personal guidance on human rights, social justice and advocacy strategies from the diverse pool of experts and mentors.

Kimberly loves to make handmade soap, carve rubber stamps, and hang out with friends. When she is free, she enjoys picking up foreign languages (including different foreign sign languages).
