About

Karen Chu

Karen is the Founder of The Good Cake, a bakery and dessert brand with a mission to eradicate elderly poverty. She dreams of expanding her social enterprise so that financial and social inclusion can be provided through employment.

Having witnessed the cruelty of aging through her grandparents’ eyes, Karen cannot imagine the difficulties and challenges one must face in this last chapter if compounded with abject poverty. Unable to live with the inconceivable – that any grandparent should go hungry in our time – The Good Cake Hong Kong was born!

Since The Good Cake’s launch in 2019, Karen has baked and sold (amongst other baked goodies) some 1000 cakes, 6500 cupcakes and 25,000 cookies. This has enabled The Good Cake to support the wellbeing of the older community in Hong Kong through rice donations to charity partners, who in turn prepare meals and/or redistribute the rations daily to those in need. The brand has donated 4.2 tonnes of rice to our older adults and dished out more than 65,625 hot meals to the community.

Driven by a deep sense of purpose and a shared commitment to enhancing the wellbeing of Hong Kong’s older adults community, Karen is inspired to unite with fellow advocates in the Fellowship. She is eager to collaborate with kindred spirits who tirelessly work towards creating a more inclusive city.

Karen, in her spare time, is an avid reader, a dog mom and most of all a human who believes in the impact of a really, really good cake.
