Ika is an Indonesian migrant domestic worker (MDW) and a passionate learner of caregiving with dignity. She aims to empower MDWs in elderly care and support them to contribute to dignified aging within families.
Hong Kong has played a significant role in Ika’s journey of personal development and growth. Despite being socially awkward and not fond of crowded spaces, Ika found her calling whilst caring for an older lady, who she has looked after for over a decade. This experience has given her a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Ika volunteers for Self Love Cupid, a project founded by 2022 Fellow Eny, and wants to establish a community of mutual learning and support for MWDs. Ika hopes to support other MDWs seeking opportunities and resources in elderly care in her native language, enabling them to contribute to dignified aging within the smallest unit of society, the family.
Ika also determines to bridge the gap between the expectations of employers and the skills and understanding of MDWs regarding dignified aging in order for them to provide caregiving with dignity; because she believes that without caregiving with dignity, there won’t be aging with dignity.
On Resolve’s Fellowship Ika is looking to learn from others and to strengthen her understanding of aging in dignity. She hopes the experience will provide opportunities for personal growth, help increase her confidence and resilience, and enable her to gain greater awareness of social issues.
In her free time, Ika finds solace in listening to Buddhist teaching podcasts and practicing mindful eating as a form of self-care. She is also passionate in acquiring more knowledge regarding frugal living, minimalism, and sustainable lifestyle.
