Hollis is a university lecturer and a passionate drama educator committed to empowering students through drama education. Embracing the new challenges brought by the Fellowship, he is keen to explore more possibilities in promoting equality in education and establish a close network with other Fellows.
Born in Hong Kong and raised in the United Kingdom, Hollis often sees himself as an outsider and is often caught between two worlds. He spent eight years adapting to new culture and language, while seeking ways to revive his artistic connection to the place he calls home. Being perceived as a “foreigner” pushed him to reevaluate and reassess his connection to his heritage and memory.
And that’s when Hollis found drama as a transformative tool to revalue his identity, establish connections, and create impactful projects based on local stories. He sees drama as an inclusive medium that bridges communities, promotes equality and sparks positive dialogues, and also as a powerful way to eliminate bigotry, inequalities and discrimination. His firm belief and personal experience with drama continue to motivate him on his journey towards social justice.
As a lecturer at a local university, he infuses drama elements as part of his teaching into the curriculum to enhance students’ learning. He was the recipient of the Arts Impact Fellowship from the West Kowloon Cultural District in 2021. He created a drama curriculum for the local induction program designed to immerse newly-arrived children in their unfamiliar surroundings. He believes quality education is of great importance in uplifting their learning experience so that they can fully embrace local culture and language, going beyond exercise books and museum visits. Hollis holds a B.A and M.A from CUHK as well as a B.F.A from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He was a Research Fellow at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale university after receiving the Arts Activator Fellowship from the Yale-China Association.
Through the Fellowship, Hollis aims to further his achievements in education and embrace new challenges. He seeks to explore the potential of drama in promoting positive communication in the workplace and conveying engaging messages to diverse stakeholders. He also welcomes the opportunity to grow and connect with other Fellows representing diverse experiences.
During his free time, Hollis enjoys Muay Thai and badminton, reading, cooking, acupuncture and spending time with cats.
