About

Gus Geopano

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Gus regards the place as his home – where he hopes to live, and start his own family in the future. His parents are both domestic workers. With help from his mother’s employer, he enrolled in a local school, which allowed him to learn about Hong Kong culture and customs from his peers. Passionate about seeing Hong Kong grow into a hub of cultural diversity, his interest in social justice and dedication to serve the community has grown over time.

Gus is currently employed as a Programme Worker in the Adolescents and Youth team at Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, a social service centre in Wan Chai that supports the local community, and especially ethnic minorities. Gus set up programs that help residents understand more about other cultures. For instance, he organised Tagalog classes for students to learn about Filipino culture through language. Through his professional experiences, he learned that there are people with disabilities among the members of the centre.  However, seeing a lack of sufficient programming to support this specific group, he began educating himself about disability rights and empowerment in order to provide a more comfortable environment for people with disabilities.

Growing up, Gus also witnessed how the Chinese-speaking and non-Chinese speaking (NCS) communities tended to be suspicious of one another because of their differences in culture and habits. As a result, he is passionate about  building bridges between the two communities. He hopes that by bringing people together, this will allow both sides to understand each other better, and help create a more harmonious environment for all. In the coming years, he plans to study Social Work and continues his work supporting marginalized groups in Hong Kong.

Gus joined the Fellowship Program with Resolve to learn social justice, as well as understand how different organizations implement their views and values through their work. During his free time, Gus is fond of playing tabletop role-playing games and board games. He used to run the game Dungeons & Dragon for his service users. Gus also enjoys playing music.
