About

Divya D. Gurung

A Nepali, born and raised in Hong Kong, Divya’s parents met in the British army barracks where her father served as a Gurkha soldier, and her mother, a teacher. Following the British handover, Divya had limited educational options, especially as a non-Chinese speaking student. Fast forward to now, Divya’s decade-long working experience in education reveals that barriers to educational opportunities for minorities continue to persist in Hong Kong, especially for those with disabilities.

With the city’s extended history of different ethnic communities contributing to its success, Divya believes that Hong Kong has the potential to develop into a flourishing multicultural hub. But until fundamental rights such as access to quality education are met with barriers for marginalised groups, that idea may not come to life.

To be part of the change, and engage in action in realising an inclusive Hong Kong, Divya initiated a voluntary organisation (Musubi Hong Kong) that supports children, families, and youth of the Nepali community. In addition to launching training and support groups for parents of children with disabilities and children’s fairs, she has worked on different projects such as zines, art and culture events, and discussions on social issues amongst youth and parents.

Currently working as a full-time Inclusion paraprofessional at an international school, Divya is also studying for a doctoral degree in Special and Inclusive Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. She is interested in partaking in research and improving inclusive policies and provisions for diverse communities in Hong Kong. By joining the Social Justice Fellowship Program, she wishes to build on skills to help her achieve these goals. In her leisure time, Divya loves watching documentaries and delving into mysticism and astrology.
