About

Chris ChUn Wai Chow

Chris, the Co-founder of Elderberry, is committed to creating opportunities for marginalized communities to become the driving force behind Hong Kong’s continued growth and development through his varied community work. He joins the Fellowship with the aim to further spur positive change in the local education landscape.

A Hong Kong native, Chris feels a deep connection to this city because of the opportunities and networks he had when he was still a student. The first in his family to learn English and receive tertiary education, he envisions a city that prioritizes education, where people of all ages can receive individualized learning that allows them to flourish in their unique ways. Reflecting on his grassroots background, he strives to address existing social issues in promoting fairness and equal opportunities for all.

Chris’s personal experience with the traditional education system made him realize how it often neglects the needs of students with different backgrounds, thus hindering and discouraging their future pursuits. Therefore, he has engaged in a lot of social justice work and collaborated with educators through experiential education, learning about students with special education needs and the difficulties they encountered. Being the co-founder of Elderberry, he hopes to create a post-retirement technology ecosystem that can empower retiring elderly to redefine their life and career through technology and achieve self-actualization. He is also involved in the Elderly Academy at the City University of Hong Kong to promote “active aging” and support the elderly in coping with social isolation through intergenerational dialogues and social events. At the same time, he works with a mental health peer support group that aims to promote a more empathetic and supportive society that values mental health.

Chris wants to be part of the Fellowship to hone his communication skills and collaborate with like-minded individuals in advancing his social justice work with Elderberry. He hopes the synergy created through the Fellowship will help drive meaningful changes in the community. In his free time, he enjoys being in tune with nature, listening to music, singing songs, spending quality time alone and with friends, and listening to and sharing stories about the world around him.
