BACKGROUND

In Hong Kong, a 2015 study by the Committee on The Rights of Persons with Disabilities, United Nations & Equal Opportunities Commission showed that students from marginalized communities experience disproportionately more instances of exclusion or bullying. Early intervention in addressing identity-based bullying is crucial to prevent long-term negative impacts on students’ well-being and learning, while fostering empathy and inclusive mindsets during formative years.

WHAT IS STAND BY ME?

This 2-year pilot program curriculum consists of a whole-form assembly, educator training, and a student leadership academy. Ultimately, it builds towards an educator peer sharing and student competition where student teams can compete for seed funding to deliver their own school community projects to foster inclusion, which will be showcased at an inter-school showcase for the wider school community.

Stand By Me FAQ

Why is Stand By Me unique?

Youth-empowered Approach

Through Stand By Me, we equip multiple levels of participants with the skills to speak up and take action against identity-based discrimination and non-inclusive behaviors. We have also sought input from dedicated Educator Champions and Youth Advisors. Driven by their own experiences and a deep commitment to creating safer spaces, they are at the forefront of shaping this program.

What’s the role of Program Advisors?

They are experts who provide guidance and advice, ensuring the Stand By Me program uses best practices in the field and aligns with the real needs of the educational climate.

What’s the role of Youth Advisors?

They are a diverse group of young people, aged 16-25, whose invaluable insights ensure the Stand By Me program truly resonates with current students. By centering their voices, we actively seek their feedback on activities and learn from their direct experiences in schools, making sure our program directly addresses the real needs of today’s youth.

What’s the role of Inclusive School Facilitators?

A unique part of our program includes that we match Inclusive School Facilitators, recruited by Resolve, to support activities and lead student groups. Our facilitators are from all walks of life: university students, freelancers, researchers, non-profit sector, advocates etc. We believe that through building relationships, students can better grasp the importance of striving for an inclusive campus.
