2024 Fellowship

2024 | Adding Life to Years: Upholding Dignity in Aging

With a longer life expectancy, we have been given the gift of extra years; but are we able to enjoy life with purpose, respect or dignity as we age?

Aging is an inevitable part of life for all of us.
Everyone experiences aging, but we don’t all have equal experiences of aging. With increasing age and lack of access to proper resources, older people are held back in numerous ways: poor mobility, lack of steady income, health issues, lack of affordable housing or living facilities, and more.

BACKGROUND

By 2024, over 21% of Hong Kongers will be aged 65+, making it a ‘super-aging society’.

By 2034, the median age of Hong Kongers will be 50.

By 2050, Hong Kong is expected to have the world’s oldest population.

The 2024 Fellowship theme was chosen to address Hong Kong’s pressing demographic shift. Aligned with our 2022-2024 meta-theme “Dignity and Social Mobility for All”, it builds on prior explorations of health, wellbeing and education, emphasizing inclusive solutions to build age-friendly environments and innovative elderly care.

WHAT WE DID

Recruiting 20 Fellows and 20 Mentors who are passionate to advance dignified aging, they are dedicated to rallying others to tackle disparities—exacerbated poverty, ageism, inadequate housing and limited healthcare access — while celebrating older adults as vital community contributors.

We ran eight dynamic workshops taking these emerging leaders through self-discovery, motivation, clarity, plus understanding Hong Kong’s aging landscape. Participants developed skills in goal-setting, pitching, storytelling, resource mobilization, resilience and more, ensuring effective community leadership in addressing intersectional social issues.
