2020 | disABILITIES and Empowerment: Less Assumptions, More Conversations

According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) World Report on Disability, more than one billion people live with some form of disability.
We envision a society where people with different abilities can be heard and where everyone has the power to bring about positive change in the community.

WHAT WE DID
COVID-19 brought a series of unexpected challenges to our Fellowship, which was previously held in-person and involved eight-hour days. We quickly adapted our eight-hour workshops into three-hour virtual sessions to improve accessibility. This transition involved shifting to a flipped-classroom model, where we created new pre-recorded content and activities, and familiarizing our team with online facilitation to maximize efficiency.

FELLOWS & MENTORS
The 2020 cohort included self-advocates for both physical and mental disabilities, as well as strong allies, such as a sign language interpreter, artists, writers and educators.

IMPACT
- Two-thirds of our Fellows have made more than five significant relationships through the Fellowship.
- 90% of Fellows said they would not have been able to achieve what they had without Resolve’s support.
- 78.6% of Mentors reported they gained new insights or knowledge from their mentees.

BACKGROUND
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) redefined disability rights, advocating for people with disabilities (PWDs) to be seen as individuals with rights, not as objects of charity. However, societal views often treat disability as a personal issue, with ingrained biases and a lack of awareness creating barriers to genuine inclusion. In Hong Kong, almost half of the PWD population lives in poverty and still face considerable adversities with everyday survival.
As our program explored and promoted equal opportunity for all groups in society under the 2018-2020 Strategic Plan, we introduced our 2020 Fellowship theme on the topic of ‘disABILITIES and Empowerment: Less Assumptions, More Conversations’.
